Jesus said to, “Heal the sick”! Matthew 10:8,(HCSB) ” Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, drive out demons. You have received free of charge; give free of charge.” I think it’s interesting how Jesus didn’t tell us to pray and ask God to heal the sick, He told US to heal the sick!
I have never seen where Jesus prayed, “Father, please heal this person!” Instead, we see that Jesus healed people with His spoken Word! In John 5:8-9 “Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk!” 9 Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk.”
The early church healed people in this same manner. In Acts 3:6-8(HCSB) But Peter said, “I don’t have silver or gold, but what I have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” 7 Then, taking him by the right hand he raised him up, and at once his feet and ankles became strong. 8 So he jumped up, stood, and started to walk, and he entered the temple complex with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.
Notice in Luke 9:1-2(HCSB) that He not only gave His disciples authority over all devils, but also to cure diseases: “Summoning the Twelve, He gave them power and authority over all the demons, and power to heal diseases. 2 Then He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.Authority is exercised when there is a RIGHT to exercise it. They weren’t praying and asking God to heal people, they had the authority to heal, and they were exercising it with a spoken word, just as Jesus did!
I want to clarify that I’m not saying that prayer can’t heal people… because it can (James 5:14-16(HCSB)14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they should pray over him after anointing him with olive oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will restore him to health; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The urgent request of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.
I’m just saying that we are taught to heal the sick using the authority that Jesus gave us! I have seen and heard of many healings that took place through prayer, so I’m not saying not to pray, or that prayer doesn’t work. I’m simply saying that we have authority over sickness, and therefore we can exercise our authority to bring about healing in another person’s life!
I also think it’s interesting how Mark 16:17-18(HCSB) tells us that healing can come through the laying on of hands:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18 they will pick up snakes; if they should drink anything deadly, it will never harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”
The laying on of hands can encourage the transferring of power from us into the person and heal them, just like the woman who felt power flow from Jesus when she touched the hem of His garment (Mark 5:30)! Jesus said that those who believe will have the Holy Ghost flowing out of their innermost being (John 7:38-39), and even Peter’s shadow healed people (Acts 5:15)!
Matthew 10:1-8 (HCSB) Summoning His 12 disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every[a] disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the 12 apostles:
First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee,and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew;Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;4 Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.5 Jesus sent out these 12 after giving them instructions: “Don’t take the road leading to other nations, and don’t enter any Samaritan town. 6 Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, announce this: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, drive out demons. You have received free of charge; give free of charge.
What we have is Christ sending out the twelve to preach. In sending them to declare the Good News, He gave them the authority over impure spirits (i.e. to drive out demons), as well as authority over every disease and sickness (Heal the sick), raise the dead (the ultimate result of all sickness), and to cleanse those that had leprosy (i.e. incurable diseases). Could it be plainer? Preaching and healing are conjoined twins in the mind of Christ it would seem. What is the point of declaring, “The kingdom of God has come,” if that kingdom cannot me manifested in the lives of all people at their point of need?
Jesus promised that any believer could do this! Any believer, including you, can lay hands on the sick and see the sick get better and better until they are finally restored back to health. All that is required for God to use you in this way are three basic criteria: 1) That you have a desire for God to heal through you; 2) That you have hands to lay on sick people; and 3) That your faith is released to activate the power of God to heal. If you can fulfill these three requirements, you’re ready to get into the healing ministry!
Matthew 28:18-20(HCSB)18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
”At the very end of Matthew’s Gospel the risen Christ leaves the Apostles with what is generally known as the Great Commission. In the commission to make disciples, He says that the Apostles must be diligent in, “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”. What had He commanded them to do? From the passages of scripture we have listed above, the answer must include; Preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, cleansing the lepers, casting out demons and raising the dead.
If Church leaders had been obedient, each generation would have been instructed to do exactly the same as Christ had originally told the twelve.
What you worship can hinder your health, Exodus 23:2524 You must not bow down to their gods or worship them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them and smash their sacred pillars to pieces. 25 Worship the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. I will remove illnesses from you.
IT IS ALL DONE THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Healing the sick is part of your responsibility as a believer. You cannot do it alone, but the Holy Spirit is present to impart His power when you act in Jesus’ name. So rather than look at sick people and feel pity for them, why don’t you pull your hands out of your pockets and go lay them on those sick people, just as Jesus did when He was ministering on the earth? The Word of God guarantees that God will work with you to bring healing and health to those who are in need. Why don’t you get started healing the sick today?
Acts 1:8 (HCSB)But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Romans 8:11 (HCSB) And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you.
Lord, I ask You for confidence to lay my hands on the sick. I want Your healing power to flow through me and to be deposited into sick bodies, attacking the enemy’s work until finally those sick people are restored back to health again. In Your Word, it is stated that when believers lay hands on the sick, the sick would be made well again. Today I am making the decision to pull my hands out of my pockets and to place them on the sick so Your healing power can be delivered to others through me!
I confess that God’s power is released into the bodies of the afflicted when I lay my hands on them. Just as medicine slowly works to reverse a medical condition, the power of God that is deposited when I lay my hands on sick people begins to attack their affliction, causing them to be progressively restored to health and well-being. Healing the sick is part of my responsibility, so I boldly confess that I am going to lay my hands on sick people just as Jesus did when He was ministering on the earth — and I expect to see them get well!
